To the King of the Sarntal Alps

At a height of 2781 metres above sea level, the Hirzer is the highest mountain in the Sarntal Alps. No wonder then, that a hike on this summit, starting from Aberstückl and via the Antran Alp, is demanding and requires a head for heights and surefootedness of those who climb it. Above all, the final section on the “Gipfelstürmersteig” (summiteers’ climb) with steep and stony paths over rocky ledges and boulders, is in a class of its own. But the rewards for your efforts are at least as great: from the Hirzer summit cross there is a fantastic panoramic view into the Passeier Valley, the Vinschgau Valley, the Etschtal Valley and across the Sarntal Alps to the Dolomites.

Kratzberger Lake

This lake is a hidden gem, situated on the southern slopes of the twin stars that are the Ifinger and the Hirzer, with the Sarner Weisshorn reflected in its waters. We are referring to the picturesque Kratzberger Lake at 2,116 metres above sea level. Hikers can enjoy the peace and quiet of the Sarntal Alps on the challenging circular tour there, which begins in Aberstückl. This is because here, in one of the quietest corners of South Tyrol, it is rare to come across other hikers. However, the climb has many steep, exposed and stony sections, which is why great care should be taken on this hike.

The Sarner Matterhorn

Due to its pyramid shape, this mountain could almost be confused with the Swiss original. And although the Sarner Weisshorn is considerably easier to climb than its visual “twin” in the land of the cuckoo clock, only sure-footed hikers with a good head for heights should risk this adventure from the Penser Joch. The all-around view from the summit cross is breathtaking. It ranges over the entire Sarntal Alps to the Texel Group, the Dolomites, Stubai and Oetztal Alps. An insider’s tip: enjoy sunrise on the 2,705 metre-high mountain.
